Frequently asked questions

WHY IS IT CALLED GOLD LEAF?

Gold leaf gets its name from the fact that it is a thin sheet of pure gold. The term "leaf" refers to the extremely thin and delicate nature of the material, which is hammered or rolled into thin sheets, often only a few microns thick. The process of creating gold leaf dates back to ancient times and has been used for decorative purposes in art, architecture, and even in food.

DOES GOLD LEAF CONTAIN GOLD? IS GOLD LEAF REAL GOLD?

Real gold leaf is primarily made of pure gold, often alloyed with metals like silver or copper to make it more malleable. However, there are also "imitation" leaves made from materials like aluminum or copper that contain no gold. If you are looking for genuine gold, always check the product’s composition. Choose carefully to ensure you are purchasing authentic gold.

HOW HEAVY IS GOLD LEAF?

Gold leaf is extremely lightweight: a single sheet of about 8x8 cm weighs less than 0.1 grams. A full booklet of 25 sheets can weigh around 2-2.5 grams, depending on the carat. Thanks to its ultra-thin thickness, it can cover large surfaces with a minimal amount of material.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOLD LEAF AND IMITATION GOLD LEAF?

The main difference between gold leaf and imitation gold leaf lies in their composition. Real gold leaf is made of pure gold, often alloyed with other precious metals like silver or copper, and is available in different carats. Imitation gold leaf, on the other hand, contains no gold and is made from materials such as aluminum, brass, or copper, mimicking the appearance of gold.

WHICH GOLD LEAF SHOULD I BUY?

The choice of gold leaf depends on its intended use. If you are looking for high quality and long-lasting results, opt for authentic gold leaf made from precious metal, often an alloy of pure gold with silver or copper, ideal for artistic gilding, restoration, and valuable objects. For less expensive or temporary applications, you can choose imitation gold leaf (also called faux gold), made from brass or aluminum, suitable for decorating furniture or walls. Make sure to select the right type based on the material you are applying it to and the gilding technique you plan to use.
